Satluj Controversy Explained: Why was the film taken down

0 0

The Satluj controversy has become one of the biggest debates in Indian cinema. Few Indian films have had a journey as turbulent as Satluj. The film sparked debate long before its release. It quickly became the centre of discussions on censorship, creative freedom and historical storytelling.

Originally titled Punjab ’95, the Honey Trehan directorial stars Diljit Dosanjh. The project remained stuck in the certification process for nearly four years. The filmmakers said the CBFC suggested 127 cuts. Satluj finally premiered on ZEE5 on July 3. However, the platform removed it from India within 48 hours. The move reignited the debate over censorship and artistic freedom.

Satluj Controversy: What Happened?

Satluj tells the story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. He investigated allegations of illegal cremations and enforced disappearances during Punjab’s militancy era.

His investigation drew international attention. However, unknown men abducted him in 1995. His murder later led to the conviction of several Punjab Police personnel. His life remains one of the most sensitive chapters in Punjab’s modern history.

Honey Trehan says he never made the film to send a political message. Instead, he wanted to tell the story of a man who risked everything in search of justice.

The 127 Cuts That Changed Satluj

Certification became the biggest hurdle for Satluj.

The filmmakers said the CBFC suggested 127 cuts. They called it one of the highest numbers proposed for a mainstream Hindi film. The suggested changes reportedly covered dialogue, names, references and several scenes.

Trehan rejected those changes. He said they would change the film’s core message.

When Satluj premiered on ZEE5, Trehan said audiences finally watched the version he had always wanted to release.

He also revealed that Jaswant Singh Khalra’s wife, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, watched the film. According to Trehan, she confirmed that the OTT version stayed true to the original story.

Diljit Dosanjh’s Stand

Diljit Dosanjh stayed largely silent during the controversy. He spoke openly after the release.During an Instagram Live session with Honey Trehan, the actor defended the film.

“If even one cut had been made, I would not have promoted the film.”

Trehan also shared how Diljit joined the project. He said the actor agreed immediately after hearing the script.

According to Trehan, Diljit replied,

“Waheguru ji… tell me when and where to come, you’ll find me there.”

Trehan later described Diljit’s support as one of the biggest reasons the project survived.

Why Punjab ’95 Became Satluj

Many viewers wondered why the makers changed the title.

Trehan said authorities did not force the change. He explained that Satluj had always been one of the options. The team later chose it because they believed it better reflected the film’s emotional journey.

Why Was Satluj Removed From ZEE5

The filmmakers planned a secret digital release. Only a few people, including Diljit Dosanjh, knew the release date. However, the celebration did not last long. ZEE5 removed Satluj from its Indian catalogue within two days.

The platform said the film would remain unavailable until further notice while it explored legal options. Government sources linked the removal to national security concerns. They also said the required regulatory process was incomplete before the release. However, officials did not specify which parts of the film raised concerns. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has not announced if or when the film will return.

Freedom of Expression Rekindled

A film was released. It was watched. Then it vanished.

The removal of Satluj has reignited a question that refuses to fade: Who decides which stories deserve to be told?

Supporters have defended the decision in the name of law and public order. Critics have warned that creative freedom cannot survive under uncertainty.

A democracy is not tested by the stories it celebrates. It is tested by the stories it allows to be questioned. If films can disappear after release, the debate is no longer about one movie. It is about the future of free expression itself.

History has shown that censorship often gives greater visibility to the very ideas that it seeks to suppress. The controversy of Satluj strengthen this statement.
