The Bihar Floods 2026 crisis has intensified after the Ganga and several of its tributaries swelled following heavy rainfall in Bihar and neighbouring Jharkhand. Around 22.4 lakh people across 12 districts are now affected, forcing authorities to expand rescue and relief operations.
Ganga crosses previous flood levels in Patna
In Patna, the Ganga crossed its previous highest flood level at several monitoring points. At Gandhi Ghat, the river reached 50.57 metres, five centimetres above the previous HFL of 50.52 metres. Punpun, Kosi, Gandak, Budhi Gandak and other rivers were also flowing above danger levels at several locations.
The floods have affected Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai and Arwal.
Rail services have also taken a hit. Train movement on the Patna-Gaya section was disrupted after rising Punpun waters affected a railway bridge near Punpun Ghat. Several trains were cancelled or diverted.
Rescue operations intensified
Authorities have deployed 1,429 boats, 27 SDRF teams and 10 NDRF teams. Around 190 community kitchens are operating, while medical camps have also been expanded.
Meanwhile, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has urged the Centre to declare the floods a national disaster. He also sought ₹5,000 crore in special assistance and Air Force helicopters for rescue operations.
With several rivers still above danger levels, authorities continue to monitor embankments and vulnerable areas across flood-hit Bihar.
