A Mumbai landslide killed seven people, including three children, in Ghatkopar early Wednesday morning. The incident took place around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Chirag Nagar. Heavy rain preceded the landslide, which sent soil and debris from a hillside onto two to three houses. Seven victims were later declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital.
Mumbai Landslide Triggers Rescue Operation
The collapse brought several emergency agencies to the site. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, NDRF, ambulance services and civic authorities are involved in the rescue operation. The narrow route to the affected area has made the operation difficult. Officials said the passage is so narrow that only one person can pass through at a time, limiting access for heavy rescue equipment.
The deceased include three children, according to civic officials. Several people also suffered injuries and were taken to Rajawadi Hospital and Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Officials said the injured people were in stable condition. The administration is continuing to monitor the situation as rescue teams search the affected area for anyone who could still be trapped.
Mayor Announces Financial Assistance
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and met affected families during the rescue operation. She directed officials to strengthen coordination between the agencies involved. The mayor also announced ₹4 lakh in immediate financial assistance for the family of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for the medical treatment of each injured person.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said it regularly warns residents living in landslide- and rockfall-prone areas. It also said officials had conducted awareness drives around Tekdi No. 3 in Ashok Nagar, Ghatkopar, because of the area’s landslide risk. The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of settlements located close to vulnerable hill slopes during Mumbai’s monsoon.
