He explained that once complaints of irregularities in the NEET-UG exam held on May 3, 2026 surfaced, the government acted immediately — the matter was handed over to the CBI, the exam was cancelled and a re-test ordered, and it was announced that NEET would move to a fully computer-based testing (CBT) format from next year. aajtak
A re-examination was successfully held on June 21 for over 20 lakh students, with results declared on July 16. Many talented students from poor and underprivileged families found success — but allegations soon surfaced that certain officials in positions of responsibility had misled students, sparking fresh controversy.
Why He Resigned
Pradhan said the events of the past 10 days had left him deeply troubled. He clarified that this was not a matter of personal dignity, but a question of the country’s youth and their future. He said he did not want students’ futures to get entangled in legal disputes and political confrontation, or their focus on studies to be disrupted — and it was with this sentiment that he decided to step down.
At the end of his letter, he thanked PM Modi for his guidance, his cabinet colleagues, and the officials and staff of the Education Ministry, adding that he would continue to work with full dedication for the people of Odisha and the aspirations of the country’s youth.

The resignation comes amid sustained pressure from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had been demanding Pradhan’s removal and had given the government an ultimatum. Meanwhile, students under the banner of the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) continue to protest at Jantar Mantar, with demonstrations also spreading to cities like Kolkata, Patna, and Nagpur.
