Two Indian Sailors Missing After Drone Attack on Tanker Near Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI: Two Indian sailors remain missing after a drone attack struck the commercial tanker MT Petro Dolphin near Oman’s Sohar Anchorage on October 11. Nine other Indian crew members were rescued safely, according to Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of commercial ships operating near the Strait of Hormuz. The region is a major route for global oil and gas shipments.

What Happened to the Indian Sailors?

The tanker was carrying 11 Indian seafarers when the reported drone attack took place. Authorities rescued nine crew members, while two Indian nationals remained missing as of October 12.

Sonowal said local authorities were conducting search and rescue operations. He also confirmed that Indian officials were coordinating with the relevant agencies to locate the missing sailors and support the crew.

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India has also sought an urgent update on the missing sailors. It has urged authorities to clarify their status and provide assistance to their families.

Another Tanker Catches Fire Near Strait of Hormuz

A second vessel, the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker MT Valthera, was also struck by an unidentified projectile on October 11. The incident caused a fire on board.

According to reports, all 11 Indian crew members aboard the vessel were safe. The two incidents have increased concerns about the risks faced by merchant ships in the region.

India has condemned the attacks on commercial vessels. Officials have called for action to protect seafarers and ensure safe maritime operations.

Why Is the Strait of Hormuz Important?

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the world’s most important routes for transporting crude oil and other energy supplies.

Any disruption in the region can affect shipping costs, energy markets and international trade. Repeated attacks on commercial vessels have also raised concerns about the safety of crews working in these waters.

Search operations for the two missing Indian sailors were ongoing at the time of reporting. Authorities had not yet confirmed their whereabouts.

BH24 News will continue to follow official updates on the rescue operation and the safety of Indian seafarers.
