US Suspends TCS, Infosys and Six Other Firms From Green Card Programme

New Delhi: The United States has suspended eight major technology companies, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys, from a key Green Card programme. The decision, announced on October 8, 2026, could delay permanent residency plans for foreign workers, including Indian IT professionals.

The US Department of Labor has stopped accepting new applications and processing pending cases under the Permanent Labour Certification programme, known as PERM, involving these companies. Officials have cited alleged misuse of immigration programmes and concerns about protecting American workers. However, the allegations have not established wrongdoing by every company.

Which Companies Are Affected by the US Green Card Suspension?

The suspension covers eight major technology companies. These include Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Capgemini.

US officials allege that the companies misused employment-based immigration programmes. They have also raised concerns about foreign workers taking jobs that American workers could fill.

The action forms part of a wider effort to tighten immigration rules. However, the full impact will depend on further investigations and any changes to the restrictions.

How Will the Decision Affect Indian IT Professionals?

The US Green Card suspension could create uncertainty for Indian professionals whose employers sponsor their permanent residency applications. Many workers rely on this process to move from temporary work status towards permanent residency.

PERM is an important step in certain employment-based Green Card applications. Employers generally need labour certification before proceeding with these applications.

As a result, affected workers may face delays in their immigration plans. Some H-1B visa holders could also face additional complications if they depend on timely PERM filings for future extensions.

However, the suspension does not automatically cancel existing H-1B visas or Green Cards. Its immediate focus is the affected companies’ participation in the PERM process.

What Happens Next?

The next steps will depend on the investigations and any further action by US authorities. Meanwhile, affected employees should contact their employers’ immigration teams for guidance on individual applications.

The suspension marks a significant development in US immigration policy. It also raises fresh concerns for Indian technology workers who hope to settle in the United States.

For now, professionals should follow official updates before making decisions about their employment or immigration plans.
