A devastating Colombia Earthquake has killed at least 132 people and injured more than 570, as rescue teams continue searching for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings. The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, causing widespread destruction across several cities and triggering emergency operations.

Rescue teams search through collapsed buildings

The earthquake’s epicentre was located near San José del Palmar in Chocó, according to reports citing seismic authorities. The powerful tremor was felt across large parts of Colombia and caused serious damage in western regions.

Cities including Pereira and Cali were among those affected, with buildings collapsing or sustaining structural damage. Rescue workers have been searching through debris for people who may still be trapped.

The scale of the disaster has become clearer as emergency teams reach affected communities. Authorities have warned that casualty numbers could change as search operations continue.

Reports on Tuesday said more than 2,700 people had been reported missing, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the final human toll.

Emergency declared after Colombia Earthquake

Colombian authorities have declared an emergency as rescue and relief operations intensify. Hospitals and emergency services are treating hundreds of injured people, while damaged infrastructure has complicated operations in some areas.

The magnitude 7.4 tremor ranks among the most powerful earthquakes to hit Colombia in recent history.

Images from affected areas show rescuers working through piles of concrete and debris where buildings once stood. The Guardian reported that scores of buildings were either severely damaged or collapsed.

For now, the priority remains finding survivors and providing medical assistance and shelter to affected communities.

As rescue operations continue, the full scale of the Colombia Earthquake remains unclear. Authorities are expected to update casualty and damage figures as teams gain access to more affected areas.
