Tokyo: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kyushu region on Tuesday, causing widespread damage, trapping people inside collapsed buildings, and triggering massive rescue operations. Authorities have urged hundreds of thousands of residents to remain alert as strong aftershocks continue.
Japan Earthquake Causes Widespread Damage
The earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture and was felt across much of Kyushu. Several buildings suffered structural damage, roads cracked, fires were reported in some areas, and power outages affected thousands of homes. Rail services and flights were also disrupted as officials assessed the damage.
Shopping Mall Collapse Traps Workers
One of the worst-hit locations was a shopping mall where part of the building collapsed following the quake. Rescue teams rushed to the scene after reports that several workers were trapped inside. Emergency crews continued search and rescue operations throughout the day.
Historic Kumamoto Castle Damaged
The earthquake also damaged parts of the historic Kumamoto Castle. Stone walls collapsed at sections of the centuries-old landmark, raising concerns about further structural damage from aftershocks. Authorities have restricted access to the site while inspections continue.
Tsunami Advisory Lifted
Japanese authorities briefly issued a tsunami advisory after the earthquake. However, the warning was lifted after sea-level observations showed no major tsunami threat. Officials have instead warned residents to prepare for strong aftershocks and possible landslides in affected areas.
Rescue Operations Continue
More than 260,000 people were advised to evacuate in vulnerable areas. Soldiers, firefighters, police personnel, and disaster response teams have been deployed to assist with rescue efforts. Hospitals are treating dozens of injured people, while authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
Officials have urged people to avoid damaged buildings, follow evacuation instructions, and stay updated through official emergency advisories as aftershocks remain possible over the coming days.
