Assam Floods: Entire Village Washed Away as Death Toll Rises to 78, Over 3 Lakh Still Affected

The Assam Floods continue to devastate the state despite water levels receding in several districts. The death toll has climbed to 78, while more than 3 lakh people remain affected. In one of the worst-hit areas, an entire village in Sivasagar district was reportedly washed away within an hour after the Dikhow River changed its course.

Hiloni Nepali Khuti Completely Destroyed

The worst destruction was reported from Hiloni Nepali Khuti village in Sivasagar district.

The village was home to nearly 200 Gorkha families. However, the swollen Dikhow River rapidly eroded the land, leaving almost nothing behind.

Residents said they had very little time to escape. Within hours, homes, roads and farmland disappeared under floodwaters.

More Than 3 Lakh People Still Affected

Although floodwaters have started receding in several districts, the crisis is far from over.

More than 3 lakh people continue to struggle with damaged homes, flooded farmland and disrupted transport. Many families are still living in relief camps because returning home is not yet possible.

Several villages also remain cut off due to damaged roads and thick layers of mud.

Relief and Rehabilitation Continue

Rescue teams and local authorities are now focusing on rehabilitation.

Relief camps are providing food, drinking water and other essential supplies to displaced families. At the same time, officials are assessing damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure.

However, rebuilding entire communities is expected to take months.

Recovery Will Be the Biggest Challenge

This year’s Assam Floods have once again highlighted the state’s vulnerability during the monsoon season.

While the immediate danger has eased in some areas, thousands of families have lost their homes and livelihoods. For many survivors, recovery has only just begun.
