Sagar Liquor Tragedy: 22 Dead After Suspected Spurious Liquor Consumption in Madhya Pradesh
Sagar liquor tragedy has shocked Madhya Pradesh after at least 22 people died following the suspected consumption of spurious liquor in Sagar district. More than 100 people have reportedly required medical treatment, with several patients admitted to hospitals. The incident has triggered a major administrative and police crackdown across the state.
The tragedy began after people in villages around Banda allegedly consumed illicit liquor. Several victims developed serious symptoms after drinking it. Authorities suspect toxic alcohol poisoning, although investigations are continuing to establish the exact cause of death.
Sagar Liquor Tragedy Triggers Statewide Crackdown
The Sagar liquor tragedy has prompted Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to order a judicial inquiry. The Chief Minister also visited survivors at Bundelkhand Medical College and Hospital and met families affected by the deaths. He directed officials to take strict action against those involved in the illegal liquor network.
The administration has also intensified checks against illegal liquor sellers. Police and excise officials are investigating the supply chain and examining whether the liquor came through an organised network. Earlier reports also pointed towards a possible connection with Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, but UP authorities have disputed that claim and sought concrete evidence.
Police Action Expands After 22 Deaths
The investigation has already resulted in multiple arrests. A case has been registered against several people, including a liquor contractor, while authorities continue searching for others allegedly connected with the supply network. Officials are also examining the role of local enforcement agencies.
Doctors at Bundelkhand Medical College have been treating seriously ill victims. Medical teams have worked urgently to provide treatment to patients showing signs of suspected poisoning. The response has highlighted the importance of rapid medical intervention in suspected toxic-alcohol cases.
The Sagar liquor tragedy has now become a major political and administrative issue in Madhya Pradesh. With a judicial inquiry underway and the crackdown expanding, authorities are expected to investigate both the source of the suspected spurious liquor and possible failures in preventing its distribution.
