The BCI NALSAR Row has taken another turn after Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra responded to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). His remarks came after the Council withdrew its controversial direction concerning NALSAR University’s 2026 graduating batch.
What did Manan Mishra say to CJP?
Mishra said the BCI and CJP have the same interest when it comes to protecting students. He also referred to CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and spokesperson Saurav Das while responding to the criticism.
The comments followed strong opposition to the BCI’s earlier move.
On August 13, the Council had directed State Bar Councils not to enrol students from NALSAR’s 2026 graduating batch until further orders. The decision came amid a controversy over protests against CJI Surya Kant’s proposed participation in a campus event.
However, the BCI withdrew the direction within hours following widespread criticism. Mishra later said that no inquiry would be initiated and stressed that students should not face obstacles while pursuing professional opportunities.
CJP demands Manan Mishra’s resignation
CJP leaders continued their attack despite the withdrawal. Reports said the group called for Mishra’s resignation and accused him of misusing his position. These remain allegations made by CJP.
The controversy also reached the Supreme Court. CJI Surya Kant criticised the proceedings against the students and questioned why the BCI had become involved in their protest.
The development has turned the BCI NALSAR Row into a wider debate over student protest, professional regulation and the limits of institutional authority.
For NALSAR’s graduating students, however, the most immediate development is clear: the BCI’s restrictive direction has been withdrawn.
