Amravati, Maharashtra: A devastating fire inside the neonatal care unit of Amravati District Women’s Hospital claimed the lives of three newborn babies in the early hours of Monday, August 24. The incident occurred at around 3:30 am on the third floor of the government hospital, where dozens of critically ill and premature infants received treatment.
According to preliminary information, a ventilator reportedly exploded inside the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), triggering the fire. At the time, 39 newborns occupied different sections of the unit. The sudden blaze created a critical emergency because several babies depended on medical equipment and required continuous monitoring.
Fire Breaks Out in Newborn Care Unit
The incident reportedly began in the section for babies born outside the hospital. Amravati Police Commissioner Rakesh Ola said nine infants occupied that section when the fire started. Three died, while staff rescued the other six and moved them for further treatment.
Officials have not yet established the exact reason for the ventilator explosion. Investigators are examining whether an electrical fault, equipment failure or another technical issue caused the incident. Authorities said they will determine the precise cause after completing the investigation.
The fire and thick smoke immediately endangered the newborns, many of whom already faced fragile medical conditions. Hospital staff acted quickly to prevent the situation from worsening.
Doctors and Nurses Begin Emergency Rescue
As soon as staff noticed the fire, doctors, nurses and other hospital employees rushed to the affected unit. They disconnected medical equipment where necessary and moved infants away from the burning section.
Hospital staff evacuated most of the babies. They moved six seriously affected infants to a nearby super-speciality hospital for further treatment. Staff also transferred other rescued newborns to different medical facilities so they could continue receiving care without interruption.
The rescue proved particularly challenging because newborns in intensive care often require oxygen support, monitoring equipment and other life-support systems. Moving such patients during a fire demands careful coordination, which made the medical team’s response crucial.
Three Families Suffer Irreparable Loss
Despite the evacuation efforts, three newborns died. The infants reportedly suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation.
Their deaths devastated their families. The parents had already faced the emotional and medical difficulties of their newborns’ treatment, and the sudden loss added another layer of tragedy.
Authorities sent the three babies’ bodies for postmortem examinations while they investigated how the fire started and why it became fatal.
High-Level Inquiry Ordered
After the incident, senior police officials reached the hospital and began assessing the situation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragedy.
The state government also announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for each deceased child’s family. Fadnavis described the incident as extremely tragic and said authorities would take strict action against anyone whom the investigation found responsible.
Officials from the fire department and the Public Works Department’s electrical wing will examine the circumstances surrounding the blaze. Their findings should help determine whether a technical malfunction, electrical problem or safety lapse played a role.
Hospital Safety Under Scrutiny
The Amravati tragedy has renewed concerns about fire preparedness and medical-equipment safety in hospitals, particularly in intensive-care areas.
NICUs and SNCUs rank among the most sensitive hospital areas because patients often cannot survive without specialised equipment. A fire in such a unit can become life-threatening within minutes.
The incident has also prompted calls for wider safety inspections. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule demanded a detailed investigation and called for fire and medical-equipment safety audits at government and private hospitals across Maharashtra.
Former Maharashtra minister and Congress leader Yashomati Thakur also questioned the hospital’s firefighting arrangements. She alleged that shortcomings in the system may have helped the blaze spread. The official inquiry must examine these allegations.
Questions That Need Answers
The immediate priority remains treating and monitoring the surviving infants. However, authorities must also answer several questions.
Why did the ventilator reportedly explode? Did technicians inspect and maintain the equipment regularly? Did fire alarms and firefighting systems work properly? How quickly could staff activate the emergency response system? Did the hospital provide adequate evacuation arrangements for critically ill newborns?
These questions matter because the incident occurred inside a specialised newborn-care facility, where even a brief interruption in medical support can cause serious harm.
The Amravati hospital fire represents more than a tragedy for the three families who lost their newborns. It also warns medical facilities about the importance of emergency preparedness. Hospitals must install reliable firefighting systems, test electrical infrastructure regularly, maintain medical equipment properly and train staff to respond immediately to emergencies.
Investigators are now reconstructing the exact chain of events that led to the fire. The high-level inquiry will determine whether an unavoidable equipment failure caused the incident or whether preventable lapses contributed to the deaths.
Until investigators release their findings, medical teams will focus on the surviving babies and their families. Stronger safety protocols across hospitals could help prevent another critical-care fire from causing a similar loss of life.
