UP breaking news: Students at a government school in Ballia allegedly went without mid-day meals for two years. The students later wrote to the District Magistrate about the issue. An inquiry then found serious irregularities at the school.
Students Raise Complaint in Ballia
Students from Classes 6 to 8 reportedly did not get mid-day meals for two years. Records, however, allegedly showed that meals were served regularly to around 200 students.
The inquiry also found alleged financial irregularities. The amount involved is nearly ₹14 lakh. The report mentions unpaid wages for cooks and alleged misuse of funds under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Abhiyan.
NHRC Seeks Report From UP Government
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu action in the case. It has sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary.
The NHRC has asked the state government to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission said the reported facts, if true, raise serious concerns about the rights of the students.
The mid-day meal scheme aims to support children’s nutrition. It also encourages students to attend school. The latest case has raised fresh questions about how the scheme is being monitored in government schools.
