Ola, Uber Banned in Chandigarh: 915 Vehicles Face Action

Chandigarh: Chandigarh has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised app-based transport services. Authorities have taken action against 915 vehicles operating through suspended cab aggregators, including Ola, Uber, Rapido and inDrive.

According to official data, 812 vehicles were challaned and 103 were impounded during the enforcement drive. Authorities have collected around ₹91.5 lakh in fines, with a penalty of ₹10,000 imposed on each vehicle.

Bike Taxis Account for Most Violations

Bike taxis made up the largest share of vehicles caught during the crackdown. Officials said 569 bike taxis were challaned and 67 were impounded, taking the total number of bike taxis involved in the action to 636.

Authorities also acted against 208 taxis. Of these, 194 were challaned and 14 were impounded. Another 71 auto-rickshaws faced action, including 49 challans and 22 impoundments.

The crackdown comes after Chandigarh suspended the licences of all four major app-based aggregators operating in the city. Ola was suspended in June, followed by inDrive in August. Uber and Rapido were suspended in September, each for six months.

Police Use Apps to Catch Drivers

Despite the suspensions, some drivers have continued accepting bookings through the apps. Police are now using the same platforms to identify and catch violators.

According to officials, some drivers allegedly switch their phones to airplane mode or cancel bookings just before starting a ride. Police have also booked rides through suspended platforms to catch drivers operating the vehicles during enforcement checks.

The Chandigarh Administration has also approached the Centre for a way to restrict the suspended apps within the Union Territory. Officials said the apps remain accessible, making enforcement more difficult.

Commuters Face Fewer Options

The crackdown has created difficulties for many commuters. With the major private aggregators suspended, passengers have fewer options and some have reported cancellations and higher fares.

Bharat Taxi remains the major app-based alternative available in Chandigarh, while authorities continue their efforts to enforce the suspension orders.

The administration has said the action is aimed at ensuring compliance with transport rules covering areas such as driver insurance, training, fares and vehicle eligibility.
