Nitin Gadkari Ethanol Row: Union Minister Rejects Conflict of Interest Claims, Defends E20 Fuel Policy

The Nitin Gadkari Ethanol Row has sparked fresh political debate. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has strongly defended the Centre’s ethanol-blending programme. Speaking to India Today TV, he rejected allegations of conflict of interest. He also said the policy aims to reduce fuel imports, support farmers, and promote cleaner energy.

Gadkari Rejects Conflict of Interest Allegations

Gadkari dismissed claims that he personally benefits from the ethanol programme. He said his family’s sugar business existed long before the government introduced the policy.

The minister revealed that his share in ethanol production is only 0.07 per cent. Therefore, he described the allegations as “completely baseless.” He argued that such a small stake cannot influence a national policy.

According to Gadkari, India produces nearly 1,500 crore litres of ethanol every year through around 550 production units. He said his contribution is too small to provide any financial advantage.

Ethanol Policy Was a Collective Decision

Gadkari stressed that the ethanol policy was not his personal decision. Instead, it was prepared after consultations with the Petroleum Ministry, the Union Cabinet, and scientific experts.

He also said the government supports several alternative fuels, not ethanol alone. The main objective is to reduce crude oil imports and increase farmers’ income.

Furthermore, Gadkari pointed out that countries such as the United States, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Thailand, and Sweden already use ethanol-blended fuels. He said India’s policy follows global practices rather than an experimental model.

Minister Challenges Critics Over E20 Petrol

The minister also responded to concerns about E20 petrol. He challenged critics to produce verified evidence showing that ethanol-blended fuel damages vehicles.

“If anyone’s vehicle has been damaged because of ethanol, they should file a complaint with the dealer and my ministry. We will investigate the matter and provide relief if required,” Gadkari said.

He further claimed that major automobile companies, including Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Tata Motors, and Mahindra, have not reported vehicle damage caused by E20 fuel.

Referring to a recent Toyota case, Gadkari said the investigation found water contamination, not ethanol, was responsible for the malfunction.

Debate Over E20 Fuel Continues

Gadkari described the controversy as a politically motivated attempt to damage his image and discredit the ethanol programme.

However, the debate over E20 petrol continues across the country. The government maintains there is no proven evidence that ethanol-blended fuel harms compatible vehicles. At the same time, some vehicle owners and industry observers remain concerned about its long-term impact on older vehicles designed for lower ethanol blends.

As India expands its clean fuel strategy, the Nitin Gadkari Ethanol Row is expected to remain in focus. The discussion will continue around energy security, environmental goals, and consumer confidence.
