Arvind Kejriwal Leads E20 Protest, Marches Towards PM Residence
The political battle over E20 petrol reached a new level as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal led a protest march in Delhi against the Centre’s ethanol-blended fuel policy.
Carrying over 2.3 lakh public petitions, Kejriwal and AAP leaders announced that they wanted to submit the signatures directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand changes to the E20 policy. March Towards PM Residence
Before the protest, Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would lead around 100 supporters to the Prime Minister’s residence while carrying petitions signed by lakhs of citizens.
Delhi Police increased security around the PM’s residence and stated that permission had not been granted for the march, leading to heavy police deployment in the area.
Transport Unions Also Join the Protest
The protest is not limited to political parties.
Several Delhi transport unions have also opposed the mandatory implementation of E20 petrol. They planned demonstrations near Parliament, saying commercial vehicle owners are worried about the possible impact on operating costs and vehicle performance.
What Is E20 Petrol?
E20 petrol is fuel that contains:
- 80% petrol
- 20% ethanol
The government says ethanol blending helps:
- Reduce dependence on imported crude oil.
- Lower fuel emissions.
- Increase demand for agricultural products used to produce ethanol.
Critics, however, believe more discussion is needed before wider implementation, especially for owners of older vehicles.
