Lotte Choco Pie has come under scrutiny in India after food safety authorities raised concerns over its labelling claims and a separate batch-level safety issue. The developments have sparked questions among consumers, especially those who regularly buy the popular snack.
FSSAI Flags Lotte Choco Pie Labelling Claims
In July, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notice to Lotte India over alleged violations of food labelling rules. The regulator found that three Lotte Choco variants carried a “100% vegetarian” claim that it considered misleading.
The products named in the notice were Lotte Choco Pie with Rich Marshmallow, Lotte Choco Real Orange and Lotte Choco Choco Burst.
FSSAI also raised concerns about the use of pre-printed packaging carrying Lotte India’s previous company name without prior approval. The regulator directed the company to explain why action should not be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act and related regulations.
The notice does not mean that every Choco Pie product has been declared unsafe. It relates to specific labelling and compliance concerns.
Separate Choco Pie Recall Issue in Chhattisgarh
A separate development has now added to the attention around Lotte Choco Pie. Authorities in Durg, Chhattisgarh, took action against a specific Choco Pie batch after it was declared unsafe.
The development resulted in recall-related action involving the affected batch. Lotte India has since clarified that the recall was a precautionary measure. The company also said it is cooperating with authorities and remains committed to food safety and quality standards.
Importantly, the latest action concerns a particular batch. Consumers should not assume that all Lotte Choco Pie products across India have been recalled.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who have purchased Lotte Choco Pie should check the product packaging carefully. They should look at the batch number, manufacturing details and expiry date before consuming the product.
The two developments involve different issues. The FSSAI notice focuses mainly on labelling and claims, while the Durg action concerns a specific product batch.
Authorities are continuing to examine the matter. Consumers should rely on official updates rather than unverified social media claims.
