July 10: Heavy monsoon showers continued to lash Uttar Pradesh on Friday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several parts of the state. The weather department warned that intense rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning could continue over the next few days, increasing the risk of waterlogging and localized flooding. As a precaution, authorities ordered the closure of schools in nine districts, while disaster response teams remained on standby.
IMD Red Alert Uttar Pradesh: Why Authorities Are on High Alert
According to the IMD, an active monsoon system is driving widespread rainfall across western and central Uttar Pradesh. Several districts have already reported persistent rain, while Najibabad recorded one of the highest rainfall totals in the state. The department expects the wet spell to continue until at least July 13, with more heavy showers likely in many areas.
The worsening weather has prompted district administrations to strengthen emergency preparedness. Schools in nine districts have remained closed to protect students, and officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Roads in low-lying areas may witness waterlogging, leading to traffic congestion and delays.
Flood Risk Grows as SDRF and NDRF Teams Stay Ready
Authorities are closely monitoring river levels, particularly in flood-prone regions such as Prayagraj. SDRF and NDRF teams have been deployed in vulnerable locations to respond quickly if the situation worsens. People living near rivers and low-lying areas have been asked to remain alert and follow official advisories issued by local administrations.
The IMD has urged citizens to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid flooded roads and rely only on official weather updates. With the monsoon expected to remain active over the weekend, fresh alerts may be issued depending on changing weather conditions.
