Google Firebase Scam: India Orders Shutdown of Accounts Used by Cybercriminals

A new online banking scam has put thousands of Indian smartphone users at risk. Indian authorities have asked Google to shut down Firebase accounts allegedly being misused by cybercriminals. The scammers were using the platform to create fake banking websites, spread malware and steal sensitive financial information. The action was taken after officials noticed a growing pattern of fraud.

Fake SBI, ICICI and Axis Bank Pages

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has flagged at least 57 Firebase-hosted websites and databases in August alone. Seven of them were reportedly designed to look like major Indian banks, including SBI, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. Fraudsters allegedly used offers such as new credit cards, reward redemptions and credit-limit increases to attract victims.

Fake PM-KISAN Apps Also Used

The scam does not stop at fake banking websites. Authorities also found a scheme using fake PM-KISAN offers to trick people into downloading malicious applications. Victims were promised help in receiving or claiming their government payment. Once installed, the malware could send information from the phone to databases controlled by scammers.

‘Android God Mode’ Malware Raises Concern

The biggest danger is that some of these malicious apps can go beyond stealing information entered by users. They may gain access to sensitive data stored on an Android phone, including financial information and one-time passwords. Cybersecurity researchers use the term “Android God Mode” for malware that can gain extensive control over a device. I4C has also warned users about malicious apps pretending to be trusted banking, government and utility services.

Google Asked to Act Quickly

The government notices reviewed by Reuters said Google could face liability for identified links if they are not removed within three hours of receiving a takedown notice. Google has said it has strict policies against phishing, malware and financial fraud and works with law-enforcement agencies. The latest action shows how cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting legitimate digital platforms to make scams look genuine.

India has seen a sharp rise in digital fraud as online payments continue to grow. Government data cited by Reuters indicates that Indians lost nearly $2.4 billion to alleged cyber fraud in 2025. The latest Firebase crackdown is therefore not just about one platform. It is part of a wider effort to disrupt the digital infrastructure used by organised scammers.
