K Annamalai Clarifies Stand on CJP, Questions BJP Over Protest Crackdown

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has clarified that he does not support the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). However, he believes that every political group has the right to protest and raise questions in a democracy.

His comments came after criticism over his remarks on the police action against CJP protesters in Delhi. Annamalai questioned the government’s response and said that authorities should answer the issues raised by protesters instead of focusing only on their demonstrations.

What Did K Annamalai Say About CJP?

Annamalai said that his views should not be seen as support for CJP as an organisation.

He explained that he does not agree with some of the group’s protest methods. However, he believes that people have the right to question the government on issues they consider important.

He also said that arrests and strict action should follow the law and proper legal procedures.

According to Annamalai, the government should respond to the questions raised by protesters rather than simply criticising them.

Why Is the CJP Protest in the News?

CJP members have been protesting over alleged problems in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They have also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protests led to police action against CJP members in Delhi. Some of the group’s leaders, including Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, faced detention and legal proceedings.

The issue has now become a wider debate about protest rights, police action and how the government should respond to criticism.

Annamalai Questions the Government’s Response

Annamalai has questioned the handling of the protests and raised concerns about the treatment of people who challenge government decisions.

He argued that calling critics anti-national or foreign agents does not answer the questions they are raising.

He also referred to a statement made by Narendra Modi in 2011, when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Annamalai used the earlier statement to question the response to protests today.

His main argument is that authorities should deal with genuine security concerns through proper legal procedures while respecting democratic rights.

Why Has the BJP Criticised Annamalai?

BJP leaders have questioned Annamalai’s position on the issue.

Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy accused him of changing his position on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls after leaving the party.

The BJP has defended the police action, arguing that authorities must act when protests cross legal limits.

Annamalai, who left the BJP in June 2026, has said that he does not agree with all of CJP’s methods but supports its right to raise questions.

This disagreement has led to a public exchange between Annamalai and BJP leaders.

What Is the Main Issue Behind the Controversy?

The controversy is about two main questions: the right to protest and the way authorities handle demonstrations.

Annamalai says that people should be allowed to question the government, provided they follow the law. The BJP, meanwhile, argues that protest rights do not allow people to break legal restrictions.

The debate has also brought attention to concerns about electoral rolls and the role of the Election Commission.
