Meerut Illegal Structures: Supreme Court Orders Action Against 16,726
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered action against 16,726 unauthorised structures in Meerut. The order covers properties in Zone-A of the city. Authorities must ask occupants to vacate the premises. They must then seal and demolish the identified structures.
A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan issued the directions while hearing a case on unauthorised construction in Meerut. The court also sought fresh reports on three other zones. It warned officials about personal liability if negligence leads to loss of life.
Meerut Illegal Structures: What Did The Survey Find?
The survey divided Meerut into four zones. These are Zone-A, Zone-B, Zone-C and Zone-D. In Zone-A, 16 inspection teams checked the area and identified 16,726 unauthorised structures. The list includes 12,907 residential properties. It also includes 874 residential-cum-non-residential properties and 2,945 non-residential structures.
The Supreme Court has directed the authorities to start action in Zone-A. Officials must first ask occupants to leave. They must then seal the properties and proceed with demolition. The court has also asked officials to submit detailed reports for Zones B, C and D. These reports must show the number and status of unauthorised structures in each zone.
Supreme Court Orders Probe Into Uldepur Colonies
The Supreme Court has also formed a judicial commission to investigate illegal residential colonies in Uldepur, Meerut. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia will head the commission. The panel will examine the land records, development of the colonies and the role of government officials.
The court also looked at 44 properties in Uldepur. Authorities had already sealed these properties. Officials have demolished 20 of them. The remaining 24 properties still face demolition. The court wants the commission to examine how the colonies developed and why authorities did not act earlier.
The Supreme Court will hear the matter again in December. Authorities must submit updated reports before the next hearing. The reports will cover the action taken in Zone-A and the status of unauthorised structures in the other zones.
