Mamata Banerjee Moves Supreme Court Over TMC Name and Symbol Freeze
Mamata Banerjee has moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission’s decision to freeze the Trinamool Congress (TMC) name and its traditional election symbol. The move comes amid an internal dispute between rival factions of the party.
The Election Commission has stopped both factions from using the “All India Trinamool Congress” name and the traditional “Jora Ghash Phul” symbol. The poll panel said the dispute needs a detailed decision under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
Mamata Banerjee Challenges Election Commission Order
Mamata Banerjee’s petition challenges the Election Commission order. Her faction has questioned the decision to freeze the TMC name and symbol.
The legal challenge comes at an important time for West Bengal politics. The dispute has moved beyond an internal party issue. It now involves the official identity and election symbol of the TMC.
The petition names the Election Commission and other parties involved in the dispute as respondents. The Supreme Court will now consider the challenge to the poll panel’s decision.
Election Commission Allots New Names and Symbols
After freezing the original TMC identity, the Election Commission allotted separate names and symbols to the two factions for the upcoming bypolls.
The Mamata Banerjee-led faction received the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress”. It was also allotted the “Football Player” symbol.
The rival faction received the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress”. It was allotted the “Envelope” symbol.
These arrangements apply to the upcoming bypolls. The original TMC name and symbol remain at the centre of the legal dispute.
TMC Name and Symbol Row Ahead of Bengal Bypolls
The dispute comes ahead of the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly bypolls. The polls are scheduled for October 6, while counting is scheduled for October 9.
The Supreme Court challenge could now become an important part of the dispute. The court’s proceedings will determine how the challenge to the Election Commission’s decision moves forward.
For now, the two factions will use their separately allotted names and symbols for the upcoming bypolls. The TMC name and traditional symbol remain subject to the ongoing dispute and legal proceedings.
