The India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test begins in Colombo on Sunday, August 23. India enter the match with a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series. Shubman Gill and his team will now aim for a clean sweep. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, need a win to level the series.
India enter the second Test with confidence
India won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs. The visitors scored 462 in their first innings. They then bowled Sri Lanka out for 284.
India added 193 runs in their second innings. As a result, Sri Lanka received a difficult target. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 206.
Devdutt Padikkal played a major role in India’s victory. He scored 167 runs in the first innings. It was also his maiden Test century.
However, India will want more runs from their top order in Colombo. Captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be among the key batters to watch.
Saransh Jain gets a chance
India have also made an important selection move for the India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test.
Saransh Jain has reportedly received his Test debut cap from Ravindra Jadeja. Therefore, India will have another spin option in Colombo.
The decision is important because spin could play a major role as the match progresses.
Before the Test, India had to decide between Jain and Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep took only one wicket in the opening match.
Jain will now have an opportunity to make an impact on his Test debut.
Sri Lanka face injury problems
Sri Lanka enter the match with several injury concerns.
Kusal Mendis is unavailable because of a hamstring injury. Dinesh Chandimal will also miss the Test after suffering a concussion during the series opener.
In addition, Pathum Nissanka is recovering from wrist surgery.
Therefore, Sri Lanka have added Kamil Mishara and Sahan Arachchige to their squad. The hosts will hope the changes help them recover from their heavy defeat in Galle.
World Test Championship points at stake
The second Test is also important for the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27.
India have already secured the series advantage. However, another victory would give them a 2-0 clean sweep and valuable championship points.
Sri Lanka have a very different target. They need to bounce back and avoid losing the series without a win.
The India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test will run from August 23 to 27 in Colombo. India will start as the team with momentum, while Sri Lanka will look to use home conditions to level the series.
