NIS Patiala Ceiling Collapse: 3 Injured During Independence Day Event

Patiala: An Independence Day celebration at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala turned chaotic on Saturday after a portion of the false ceiling collapsed inside the multipurpose-cum-wrestling hall.

The NIS Patiala ceiling collapse occurred while a cultural programme was underway. Students and athletes were present inside the hall when the ceiling suddenly gave way, triggering panic among those attending the event.

NIS Patiala Ceiling Collapse Injures Students

Reports indicate that three people suffered injuries in the incident. Initial reports had put the number at two. The injured were taken for medical attention after the ceiling panels fell.

Later reports said the injuries were minor. Medical teams at the campus immediately attended to those affected. Some students and athletes were also sent for CT scans as a precaution. Officials later confirmed that those examined were safe.

Rain May Have Weakened Ceiling

NIS officials indicated that continuous rainfall in the area could have allowed water to seep through the roof. This may have weakened the false-ceiling panels and contributed to the collapse.

The exact cause, however, requires further assessment. The incident has also raised questions about infrastructure safety at a major national sports facility.

Independence Day Event Disrupted

The main Independence Day celebrations were reportedly held outdoors. A cultural programme was taking place inside the multipurpose-cum-wrestling hall when the ceiling collapsed.

The sudden incident brought the programme to a halt and caused panic among students, athletes and other attendees.

The Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports is a major training centre for athletes from several sporting disciplines. The incident has highlighted the importance of proper infrastructure checks, particularly during the monsoon season.
