Former India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about being dropped from the national team. The decision came soon after he led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title.
Shreyas Iyer replaced him as T20I captain. Meanwhile, Suryakumar was left out of the squad.
Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up About His Exit
Speaking to former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, Suryakumar discussed how he reacted to the selectors’ decision.
At first, he tried to stay calm. However, with time, he began questioning why the team needed such a major change soon after winning the World Cup.
India had enjoyed a successful run under his captaincy. The team had not lost a T20I series before its World Cup victory. He had also guided India to an Asia Cup title.
Because of those results, Suryakumar expected to continue as captain for a longer period. Major events, including the Olympics and another T20 World Cup, were also ahead.
No Issue With Shreyas Iyer as Captain
Despite losing the captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav said he had no problem with Shreyas Iyer taking over the role.
He spoke positively about Iyer as a player, person and captain. His disappointment was mainly about losing his own place in the team.
Selectors Contacted Suryakumar Before Announcement
Suryakumar said the selectors contacted him around two or three days before announcing the squad.
According to him, he was informed that the team wanted to move forward.
His batting form had also been under scrutiny. His IPL 2026 campaign did not produce the results he would have expected.
Still, Suryakumar has not closed the door on an international comeback.
He said he remains ready to play whenever the selectors feel the time is right.
For Suryakumar Yadav, the episode marked a major career setback. However, his latest comments show that he remains prepared for another opportunity with Team India.
