The Satya Niketan Building Collapse, which killed seven people at a boys’ paying guest accommodation near Delhi University’s South Campus, has triggered fresh demands for accountability and stronger regulation of student housing. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has announced seven demands, ranging from compensation for victims’ families to an independent investigation into an alleged nexus surrounding private PG operations.
CJP seeks independent probe and ₹1 crore compensation
At a press conference, CJP co-convener Saurav Das said the investigation should go beyond the owner of the collapsed building. The party demanded an independent criminal probe into what it described as a possible nexus involving PG operators, politicians and others. These claims remain allegations and require investigation.
CJP also demanded ₹1 crore compensation for the family of each person killed and ₹20 lakh for those critically injured.
The party called for time-bound, engineering-grade structural audits of schools, colleges and student accommodations, along with action against illegal construction. It also proposed a publicly searchable database where students could check whether PGs and hostels have required safety approvals.
More DU hostels among key demands
CJP further called for more government hostels for Delhi University and other students, arguing that limited institutional accommodation increases dependence on private PGs.
The party also sought publication of records related to 13 district committees created after the Hauz Rani fire, including details of inspections and enforcement action. It separately demanded accountability from Delhi minister Ashish Sood.
The demands come as authorities intensify scrutiny of student housing. The Delhi government is considering a new safety policy and structural audits in major PG hubs following the Satya Niketan Building Collapse.
