GTA 6 Modding Rules Updated: Rockstar Warns Modders Not to Change Story or Mix Game Content

Rockstar Games has updated its guidelines for game modifications, giving mod creators several restrictions on what they can do with Rockstar titles. The updated rules are especially relevant as GTA 6 approaches its scheduled November 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

No Changes to Official GTA Stories

According to the updated guidelines, modders should not expand or modify official stories, missions, characters or other established elements of Rockstar’s games.

This means creators cannot freely rewrite the original storyline or significantly alter official missions and characters through mods.

No Mixing Content From Different Rockstar Games

Another important restriction concerns combining content from different Rockstar titles.

Modders are asked not to take maps, characters, storylines, game assets or other intellectual property from one Rockstar game and add them to another.

Fan Ports Are Also Restricted

The rules also prohibit modifying Rockstar games to make them run on consoles, hardware or other platforms where Rockstar has not officially released them.

Restrictions on Voices and Other People’s IP

The guidelines also address copyrighted material. Modders should not use or modify voice recordings from Rockstar games in other products.

The rules further restrict the use of third-party intellectual property, including music, characters, photographs, brands and real-world locations without appropriate rights.

Gacha, Loot Boxes and Crypto Mods Banned

Rockstar’s rules also prohibit mods involving gambling, loot boxes, gacha mechanics and similar real-money probability-based systems.

The guidelines also restrict selling in-game virtual currency for real money and the use or promotion of cryptocurrencies, NFTs, tokens, memecoins and stablecoins in mods.

What This Means for GTA 6

The updated rules do not mean that all GTA 6 or GTA-related mods are banned. Rather, Rockstar has outlined specific boundaries around story changes, cross-game content, intellectual property, unauthorized ports and monetization.

Rockstar already maintains official guidance covering single-player/story-mode modifications, and its copyright policy states that unauthorized mods or ports that violate Rockstar’s rights can be subject to removal.
