EPFO Wage Ceiling Raised to ₹25,000: 51 Lakh More Workers to Get Coverage
The EPFO wage ceiling has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The Union Cabinet approved the change on September 16, 2026. The new ceiling comes into effect from September 17. The move is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory EPFO coverage.
The change will mainly affect employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month. Under the earlier limit, new employees earning above ₹15,000 were not automatically covered under the mandatory EPF framework. The higher ceiling will expand access to provident fund savings and other social security benefits, subject to the applicable scheme rules.
EPFO Wage Ceiling: What Changes for Employees?
The EPFO wage ceiling was last increased in September 2014. At that time, the limit was raised to ₹15,000 per month. It has now been increased to ₹25,000 after more than a decade. The government said the revision takes into account rising wages, higher incomes and the growth of formal employment.
Employees brought under mandatory coverage will have access to benefits linked to EPFO schemes. These include Employees’ Provident Fund savings, pension protection under the Employees’ Pension Scheme and insurance protection under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, subject to the respective scheme provisions.
EPFO Wage Ceiling 2026: Who Will Benefit?
The new EPFO wage ceiling will bring a larger group of formal-sector employees into the statutory social security framework. The government expects more than 51 lakh additional employees to come under mandatory coverage. A Labour Ministry official also said the eventual number could be higher.
The government estimates that the change will increase its annual financial commitment to around ₹11,339 crore. The estimated expenditure over five years is about ₹56,696 crore. The Ministry of Labour and Employment and EPFO will take the required administrative and statutory steps for implementation.
The EPFO currently has around 7.98 crore contributing members across nearly 7.68 lakh contributing establishments, according to government data. The latest decision is expected to widen the reach of India’s formal social security system.
