Assam MLAs Donate One Month’s Salary for Flood Relief, Raijor Dal Opts Out
Floods have once again caused massive damage across Assam. Thousands of families have been affected. Many people have lost their homes, crops, and livelihoods. To support the victims, almost all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have decided to donate one month’s salary for flood relief.
The announcement was made during the Assam Assembly session. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass said he and Deputy Speaker Numal Momin would also donate one month’s salary. Assembly Secretariat employees will contribute one day’s salary to the relief fund.
Political Parties Come Together
The BJP was the first to announce its support. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika confirmed that all BJP MLAs would donate one month’s salary.
The Congress also joined the initiative. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said public representatives should stand with people during difficult times. He added that Congress workers were already helping flood-hit families.
The AIUDF, AGP, BPF, and the lone Trinamool Congress MLA also pledged one month’s salary. The decision received support from almost every political party in the Assembly.
Raijor Dal Does Not Join the Donation
Raijor Dal was the only party that did not announce a salary donation. Its MLAs did not join the collective pledge during the Assembly session.
The party did not explain its decision at the time. As a result, its absence from the donation drive has become a talking point.
Assam Faces a Long Road to Recovery
Floodwaters have damaged villages, roads, schools, and farmland across the state. Thousands of people were moved to relief camps. Many families are still waiting to return home.
The state government is providing food, clean water, medicines, and temporary shelter. Rescue teams and volunteers continue to help affected communities. However, rebuilding homes and restoring livelihoods will take time.
A Strong Message of Unity
The salary donation is a symbolic but meaningful step. It shows that leaders can come together during a crisis. While the financial support alone cannot solve every problem, it will help relief efforts.
As Assam recovers from the floods, support from the government, public representatives, and citizens will remain important. The donation drive has highlighted political unity, while Raijor Dal’s decision to stay out continues to draw attention.
