Air India Flight Suffers 300-Foot Altitude Drop; New Report Flags Hydraulic and Autopilot Warnings

An Air India flight altitude drop over Odisha has raised fresh questions after a post-flight maintenance report reportedly listed multiple technical warnings.
Air India flight AI2379 was flying from Phuket to Delhi on August 4 when it suddenly lost around 300 feet of altitude during cruise. The aircraft encountered severe turbulence, throwing passengers and crew members into the air. Seventeen people, including 13 passengers and four crew members, were injured and taken for medical evaluation. The aircraft later landed safely in Delhi.
Air India Flight Altitude Drop Under Investigation
The latest development comes from a purported post-flight maintenance report. According to a report published by The Times of India on Thursday, the document lists warnings involving the aircraft’s hydraulic systems, flight controls and autopilot.
These findings could add another layer to the investigation. However, the warnings alone do not establish that a technical failure caused the sudden altitude change. Investigators still need to determine how the systems behaved during the turbulence and whether they contributed to the incident.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is examining the incident. Airbus and France’s Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety are also expected to assist with the probe.
Passengers Thrown Into the Air
The sudden movement caused passengers and crew members to be thrown from their seats. Some suffered injuries after hitting the aircraft’s interior.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of keeping seat belts fastened throughout a flight. Severe turbulence can occur with little warning, even when an aircraft is cruising normally.
Air India said the aircraft continued normally after the brief event and landed safely in Delhi. The investigation will now focus on determining exactly what caused the sudden altitude change and whether the newly reported system warnings played any role.
