Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has responded to Elon Musk’s criticism of the delay in launching Starlink in India. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha posted, “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy,” adding a political twist to the growing debate over satellite internet approvals.
Musk Questions Delay in Starlink’s India Launch
Musk, who leads SpaceX, has questioned why Starlink has yet to begin commercial operations in India. He said the company was licensed in more than 165 countries and had spent five years meeting Indian government requirements.
The billionaire also asked on social media whether Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani was the “real boss of India.” Earlier, Musk had alleged that unnamed powerful business interests were blocking Starlink to protect their market position. He did not initially identify those he accused.
Musk Responds to Rahul Gandhi
Gandhi’s reply drew a response from Musk, who thanked the Congress leader and described the situation as “troubling.” Gandhi did not identify the person he meant by “the other guy,” leaving the remark open to interpretation.
The exchange comes amid a wider debate over competition in India’s satellite communication sector.
Government Rejects Claims of Bias
The Union government has rejected Musk’s allegations of unfair treatment. The Communications Ministry said India’s regulatory framework for satellite communication services was fair and non-discriminatory.
Starlink, Reliance Jio’s satellite venture and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb have received licences. However, all three still require the necessary security assessments and spectrum-related approvals before commercial services can begin.
The dispute has brought fresh attention to India’s satellite internet market, where regulatory clearances remain central to the launch timeline.
