H-1B Visa Fee Hike: US Proposes $103,265 Charge

BH24 Breaking News

The United States has proposed a massive $103,265 fee for certain new H-1B visa petitions. The move could make it much more expensive for American companies to hire skilled foreign workers. The proposal is likely to draw major attention in India because Indian professionals form the largest group of H-1B beneficiaries.

H-1B Visa Fee Could Reach Nearly ₹90 Lakh

The proposed fee is worth nearly ₹90 lakh depending on the exchange rate. It would apply to certain new H-1B petitions subject to the annual visa cap. The employer would be responsible for the payment. The proposed charge would come on top of other existing H-1B filing costs.

Why Indians Could Be Affected

Indian professionals could face a major impact if the proposal becomes final. Indians accounted for around 71% of approved H-1B beneficiaries in fiscal year 2024. A much higher sponsorship cost could make some US companies more cautious about hiring foreign workers. It could also increase competition for jobs that require H-1B sponsorship.

Is the $103,265 Fee Final?

No. The fee is currently a proposal and is not yet a permanent H-1B charge. The proposal must go through the federal rulemaking process and public comment period. Legal challenges could also follow before any final implementation.

What Happens Next?

The proposed fee will now face public and legal scrutiny. If it becomes final, H-1B sponsorship could become far more expensive for US employers. The change could have a significant impact on Indian IT professionals and other skilled workers seeking opportunities in America.

BH24 will continue tracking the latest H-1B visa developments.
