Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Captain
New Delhi: Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats. The veteran cricketer announced her decision on Tuesday, October 6, bringing her long leadership stint to an end.
Harmanpreet will continue to play for India. However, she will no longer lead the team in Tests, ODIs or T20Is. The decision marks a major change for Indian women’s cricket.
Harmanpreet Kaur Ends Long Captaincy Stint
Harmanpreet became India’s T20I captain in 2016. She later took charge of the ODI and Test teams. Over the years, she became one of the most experienced leaders in women’s international cricket.
Her biggest achievement came in 2025 when she led India to their first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title. India also won gold at the 2026 Asian Games under her leadership.
Harmanpreet also guided India through several major international tournaments. Her leadership helped establish her as one of the key figures in Indian women’s cricket.
Harmanpreet to Continue as Player
The 37-year-old made it clear that her decision does not mark the end of her international career. She will continue to represent India as a player.
Harmanpreet described the decision as difficult after spending years leading the national team. She also reflected on the memories and emotions attached to her captaincy journey.
Her decision now opens a new chapter for Indian women’s cricket. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will decide the team’s next captain.
