PM-Kisan Scheme Extended Till 2031 as Union Cabinet Approves ₹3.15 Lakh Crore Outlay

The PM-Kisan Scheme will continue for another five years after the Union Cabinet approved its extension from 2026-27 to 2030-31. Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet cleared a financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore, reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing direct income support to eligible farmer families.

₹6,000 Annual Assistance to Continue

Under the PM-Kisan Scheme, eligible landholding farmer families will continue receiving ₹6,000 every year. The amount will be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts in three equal instalments through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

The government said the technology-driven framework, supported by Aadhaar authentication and digital verification, has helped ensure transparency, efficiency and timely payments since the scheme was launched in February 2019.

More Than ₹4.47 Lakh Crore Already Distributed

According to the official release, the PM-Kisan Scheme has transferred over ₹4.47 lakh crore directly to farmers through 23 instalments.

The most recent instalment reached more than 9.49 crore farmers, with over ₹18,984 crore credited to their accounts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheme also provided timely financial support by releasing more than ₹1.71 lakh crore to beneficiaries.

Supporting Farm Investment and Rural Economy

The government said the financial assistance enables farmers to invest in seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, farm machinery and other agricultural requirements. This support also helps reduce dependence on informal borrowing while strengthening household financial stability.

The official statement added that women farmers have received more than ₹1.06 lakh crore under the scheme, with nearly one in every four beneficiaries being women.

Independent Assessments Show Positive Impact

The PMO cited an evaluation by NITI Aayog’s Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), which found that over 92% of beneficiaries used the assistance for farming activities. Around 85% reported higher agricultural income and reduced reliance on informal credit.

The report also noted improvements in agricultural productivity and foodgrain output during the assessment period.
