The BJP has rejected a media report claiming that the Centre offered Dharmendra Pradhan another ministry before accepting his resignation as education minister. Party spokesperson Sambit Patra called the claim “fictional” and “unfounded.” The denial has added a new layer to the debate over negotiations between the government and the student-led CJP movement.
BJP Issues a Direct Denial
The disputed report said the Centre had proposed moving Pradhan out of the Education Ministry instead of removing him from the Union Cabinet. It also claimed that CJP representatives rejected the proposal and continued to demand his resignation.
Patra denied that such an offer was ever made. He said the report lacked a factual basis and described it as imaginary. However, the party did not release a detailed account of the discussions held with protest representatives.
Therefore, the exact content of those talks remains outside the public record. No official document confirming a proposed portfolio change has emerged.
What the Original Report Claimed
NDTV reported, citing unnamed sources, that Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh discussed a possible change in Pradhan’s portfolio during talks on July 20. According to that account, the protesters refused the proposed compromise.
The BJP’s response directly challenges that version. Since the initial claim relied on unidentified sources, it cannot be treated as independently established fact.
At the same time, the denial does not dispute Pradhan’s resignation itself. Reuters reported that he stepped down on July 25 after sustained youth protests. Pralhad Joshi later received additional charge of the Education Ministry.
Earlier Remarks Fuelled Speculation
Separate comments by BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya had already intensified discussion about Pradhan’s position. Vijayvargiya claimed that Pradhan offered to resign on the first day of the protests.
That statement concerned Pradhan’s alleged willingness to quit. It did not confirm that the government offered him another portfolio. The two claims relate to the same political crisis but remain different.
What Remains Unclear
The Dharmendra Pradhan portfolio row now rests on two conflicting accounts. One report, based on anonymous sources, says the government explored a ministry change. The BJP says no such proposal existed.
Without meeting records, an official government note or named participants confirming the proposal, the claim remains disputed. For now, the BJP’s public position is clear: it considers the report baseless.
The controversy may continue if protest leaders or officials provide fresh details. Until then, reports about an alternative ministry should be presented as an allegation that the ruling party has formally denied.
