Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike entered its 19th day on Thursday, with the environmental activist refusing to end his indefinite fast despite growing concerns over his health. Doctors monitoring him have warned that his condition is becoming increasingly serious, while supporters across the country continue to rally behind his movement.
The protest, taking place at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, has drawn national attention. Wangchuk will continue the hunger strike until meaningful action is taken on the issues he has raised.
Why is Sonam Wangchuk on a hunger strike?
The protest aims at demanding greater transparency and accountability in India’s competitive examination system. He has raised concerns over alleged irregularities, including the NEET paper leak controversy, and has urged authorities to introduce stronger safeguards to restore public trust.
Instead of ending his fast, Wangchuk has appealed to citizens to join a peaceful “Chalo Parliament” march scheduled for July 20. He said the movement should remain peaceful and democratic while encouraging wider public participation.
Doctors warn about his health
Medical experts monitoring Wangchuk have expressed concern over his deteriorating condition. According to doctors, he has lost more than 9 kilograms since the hunger strike began and now weighs around 56.9 kg.
Doctors said prolonged fasting increases the risk of dehydration, muscle loss, electrolyte imbalance and damage to vital organs. His blood pressure, blood sugar and other vital signs are being monitored regularly. They have cautioned that continued fasting could lead to serious medical complications if it continues for much longer.
Delhi High Court orders regular health monitoring
The Delhi High Court also took note of Wangchuk’s health during proceedings related to the protest. The court believes that the human life is precious. Meanwhile, authorities will ensure that his medical condition is monitored regularly.
The Centre informed the court that doctors and medical teams are available and that appropriate medical assistance would be provided whenever necessary.
Support grows across the country
Support for Wangchuk’s protest has continued to grow. Several civil society groups, students and activists have organised peaceful demonstrations in solidarity with him.
A one-day mass hunger strike was also held in support of Wangchuk. Actor Atul Kulkarni announced his participation in a symbolic fast and urged the government to begin talks with the activist to resolve the issue through dialogue.
Who is Sonam Wangchuk?
Wangchuk is an engineer, education reformer and environmental activist from Ladakh. He founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) and received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for his contribution to education and sustainable development.
He is the well known and the real-life inspiration behind the character Phunsukh Wangdu in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots.
What happens next?
Attention is now on the planned July 20 Parliament march, which will bring together supporters from across India. At the same time, doctors continue to warn that every additional day of fasting increases the risk to his health.
Both Wangchuk’s medical condition and the future direction of the protest will be extremely crucial.
