Sikkim tunnel landslide has triggered a large-scale rescue operation after heavy rainfall caused part of an under-construction tunnel to collapse in Namchi district. Several workers remain trapped inside the tunnel, while rescue teams are battling difficult conditions, including debris and a suspected gas leak, to reach those still missing. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of construction work during the monsoon season in the Himalayan region.
The landslide struck the Teesta Stage VI
Hydroelectric Project on Monday afternoon. Officials said 43 workers were inside the tunnel when the collapse occurred. Sixteen workers managed to escape safely, but at least 27 were trapped deep inside the tunnel, nearly three kilometres from the entrance. Rescue teams have since recovered multiple bodies, while the search for the remaining workers continues.
Rescue Teams Face Tough Conditions
Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, fire services and project officials are working together at the site. Their efforts have been slowed by unstable debris, poor visibility inside the tunnel and a suspected underground gas leak, forcing rescuers to wear specialised protective equipment.
Heavy rain has continued in the area, making rescue work even more difficult. Authorities are using machinery to clear debris from the tunnel entrance while specialised teams attempt to reach the trapped workers safely. Medical teams and ambulances remain on standby outside the site.
Government Monitoring the Situation
The Sikkim government is closely monitoring the rescue operation. Senior officials have reached the accident site and directed agencies to use every available resource to save those trapped. Authorities said the immediate priority is rescuing survivors, while a detailed investigation into the cause of the collapse will begin after the operation ends.

The Teesta valley has witnessed repeated landslides in recent years due to intense rainfall and fragile mountain terrain.
