A late-night hotel stay turned into a deadly tragedy in central Kolkata on Wednesday after a fire swept through a multi-storey building, killing at least nine people, including a child. The blaze also left several others injured and triggered serious questions about fire safety arrangements in one of the city’s busiest areas.
The fire broke out in the early hours of August 19 at a building on Mirza Ghalib Street, a crowded part of central Kolkata known for budget hotels, restaurants and accommodation used by visitors travelling to the city. According to Reuters, the fire was reported at around 2:50 a.m., when most guests were likely asleep.
What made the situation particularly dangerous was the rapid spread of thick smoke inside the building. Rescue teams faced difficulty reaching people on the upper floors, with reports indicating that several rooms had limited or no windows. For guests trapped inside, escaping through smoke-filled corridors and stairways became extremely difficult.
Nine People Lose Their Lives
At least nine people died in the incident. The victims included a child, highlighting the devastating impact of the blaze on families staying at the hotel.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry confirmed that five Bangladeshi nationals were among those killed. Four of them were members of the same family. The group had travelled to Kolkata in connection with medical treatment, making the tragedy especially painful for relatives waiting for their return.
Six other Bangladeshi nationals who were injured received medical treatment and were later discharged, according to Bangladesh’s foreign ministry.
The incident has therefore drawn attention not only in India but also in Bangladesh, where families are seeking information about their relatives and coordinating with officials over the victims.
Around 80 People Rescued
Despite the scale of the fire, emergency teams managed to rescue around 80 people from the building. Firefighters, police personnel and disaster management teams worked together as smoke spread through the premises.
Several fire engines were sent to the location. Officials said the blaze was brought under control after an intense rescue operation that lasted roughly an hour.
However, rescue workers faced major challenges because of the dense smoke. Officials said some victims may have died from smoke inhalation rather than direct exposure to the flames.
The building’s design also appears to have complicated the rescue. Reports said some rooms lacked windows, while narrow access points made it harder for people to get out quickly. A couple trapped inside a room with a window was reportedly rescued.
What Caused the Fire?
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established.
Initial indications pointed towards a possible electrical short circuit. Authorities are also examining other possibilities and have begun a forensic investigation to determine how the blaze started and why it spread so quickly.
Reports from other sources have mentioned a possible air-conditioner-related fault, but this has not been confirmed as the official cause. Investigators will have to examine electrical equipment, wiring and other parts of the building before reaching a final conclusion.
That distinction is important because determining the cause will also help authorities establish whether the incident resulted from an accidental malfunction or whether safety violations played a role.
Questions Over Fire Safety
The tragedy has brought the condition of budget hotels and older buildings in congested parts of Kolkata under scrutiny.
The building reportedly housed multiple hotels and commercial establishments. Officials have raised concerns about whether basic safety and construction requirements were properly followed.
The absence or inadequacy of emergency exits, ventilation and firefighting equipment can dramatically increase the danger during a fire. When smoke fills corridors and staircases, even a relatively small blaze can become life-threatening within minutes.
The Kolkata incident has therefore raised wider questions about inspections, fire licences and enforcement of safety standards in hotels operating from older or crowded buildings.
West Bengal authorities have indicated that fire safety inspections will be carried out at hotels following the tragedy. Such inspections could help identify other properties where guests may be exposed to similar risks.
Hotel Owner Reportedly Missing
Police have also started investigating the hotel’s management. Reports said the owner was absconding after the incident, while police began efforts to locate him.
Authorities are expected to examine whether the hotel had the required permissions and whether safety regulations were being followed.
If investigators find that mandatory safety measures were ignored, the case could lead to legal action against those responsible for operating or maintaining the premises.
A Warning for Crowded Hotel Areas
The Kolkata fire is more than an isolated tragedy. It has once again exposed the risks faced by people staying in low-cost accommodation located inside densely packed urban buildings.
For travellers, especially those unfamiliar with a city, a hotel room often feels like a safe temporary home. But during an emergency, the availability of clearly marked exits, working fire alarms, extinguishers and accessible escape routes can determine who survives.
The incident also underlines the importance of regular inspections rather than waiting for a disaster to expose safety failures.
As the investigation continues, authorities will need to establish exactly how the fire began, why the smoke spread so quickly and whether the building met required safety standards.
For the families of the nine victims, however, the questions surrounding the fire cannot undo the loss. What began as an ordinary overnight stay in Kolkata ended in a tragedy that has claimed nine lives and raised urgent concerns about the safety of hotels across the city.
