Jantar Mantar Protest Row: 2 CJP Leaders Sent to Jail, Political Tensions Rise

Delhi’s Jantar Mantar protest row took a major turn on Wednesday, October 14, after two Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders were sent to five days of judicial custody. The action followed their alleged unauthorised entry into the protest area and slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The case has intensified an ongoing political dispute over restrictions on demonstrations and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police say the leaders violated restrictions, while the party has defended its protest.

CJP Leaders Face Judicial Custody After Jantar Mantar Incident

According to reports, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to five days of judicial custody after appearing before a magistrate in Delhi. Ajinkya Shinde, who was also detained, was released after signing a bond, according to media reports.

Police alleged that the group entered Jantar Mantar by breaching barricades despite the area no longer being an officially designated protest venue. The case includes allegations of trespassing, violating prohibitory orders, breaching a peace bond and obstructing a public servant.

The leaders had reportedly been detained during an earlier protest and signed an undertaking to maintain peace for a year. The latest action has therefore brought renewed attention to the restrictions and legal conditions surrounding demonstrations in the capital.

Why Is the Jantar Mantar Protest Row Growing?

The dispute comes amid protests against the SIR process, which involves reviewing and updating electoral rolls. CJP members and opposition parties have raised concerns about alleged irregularities and demanded action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Election Commission’s voter-roll revision has become a major political flashpoint. Critics argue that the exercise could unfairly affect eligible voters, while the BJP and the Election Commission have rejected allegations of wrongdoing.

Jantar Mantar was recently removed from the list of designated protest venues. Delhi Police named Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as alternative locations for demonstrations. The change has drawn criticism from protesters who say moving rallies away from the central protest site could reduce their visibility.

What Happens Next?

The judicial custody order marks another escalation in the confrontation between authorities and the protesting group. The leaders’ legal options and any challenge to the order could shape the next stage of the dispute.

The broader SIR controversy is also likely to remain a political issue as opposition parties continue to demand answers about electoral-roll revisions. For now, the Jantar Mantar case highlights the growing tension between protest restrictions, police action and demands for electoral transparency.

This report is based on media reports available on October 14, 2026. Allegations in the case have not been presented as proven findings.
