New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has cautioned political parties against turning the Supreme Court into a platform for political confrontation. His remarks on Monday, October 12, came amid protests in Delhi and an Opposition march over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions.
CJI Stresses Judicial Independence
Addressing concerns raised during court proceedings, the Chief Justice emphasised that democratic protests must not interfere with the functioning of judicial institutions.
He said lawyers, court employees and litigants should be able to enter and move around the Supreme Court without obstruction.
The observations came as petitions concerning the detention of lawyers and restrictions imposed during protests were brought before the court.
Opposition March Adds Political Context
The remarks coincided with an INDIA bloc march led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, demanding action over alleged electoral irregularities and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Opposition has questioned the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the exercise has affected voters’ rights.
However, these allegations remain disputed and subject to legal scrutiny.
The Chief Justice also declined a proposed private meeting with Congress representatives, indicating that grievances involving pending judicial matters should follow established legal procedures.
Supreme Court Maintains Its Position
The developments have brought renewed attention to the relationship between political protests and judicial independence.
While citizens and political organisations retain the right to peaceful protest, the Chief Justice stressed that such activities must not disrupt access to justice.
His message underscored the importance of keeping judicial proceedings separate from political confrontation.
