Supreme Court Orders Fresh Elections in 50 Punjab Wards

The Supreme Court has ordered fresh elections in 50 municipal wards across Punjab. The decision follows allegations of irregularities during the local body elections. The court has directed authorities to complete the fresh polls within six weeks.

The affected wards are located in Patiala and Moga districts. The ruling comes after an inquiry found serious problems during the nomination process.

Why Did the Supreme Court Order Fresh Elections?

The case concerns Punjab’s municipal elections held in December 2024. Several candidates alleged that they faced obstacles while filing their nomination papers.

An inquiry led by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Nirmaljit Kaur examined these complaints. The report described incidents of alleged intimidation and obstruction.

According to the findings, some candidates faced threats and physical attacks. Others alleged that their nomination papers were snatched, torn or destroyed. The report also raised concerns that opposition candidates were prevented from contesting.

After reviewing the findings, the Supreme Court ordered fresh elections in the affected wards.

Which Punjab Wards Will Hold Fresh Polls?

The order covers 50 municipal wards in two districts.

Patiala accounts for 28 wards, while Moga accounts for the remaining 22. Voters in these wards will get another opportunity to elect their local representatives.

The court has directed officials to complete the election process within six weeks. The fresh polls aim to give eligible candidates a fair chance to participate.

How Will the Fresh Elections Be Monitored?

The Supreme Court has also introduced measures to improve transparency. It asked the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to appoint a monitoring committee headed by a retired judge.

Senior members of the High Court Bar will also act as observers. In addition, authorities must arrange videography during key stages of the election process.

These stages include the filing of nominations, scrutiny of papers, allocation of election symbols and polling. Punjab must also provide details of the officials and police officers responsible for each ward.

The measures aim to prevent a repeat of the alleged irregularities.

What Does the Ruling Mean for Punjab Politics?

The decision puts election fairness in focus. It also highlights the importance of allowing every eligible candidate to contest without pressure or obstruction.

The fresh elections will test whether the new safeguards can ensure a transparent process. Voters in the 50 affected wards will now await the revised election schedule.

The ruling sends a clear message: electoral procedures must protect the right of candidates to participate freely and the right of voters to choose their representatives.
