Bihar Flood Alert: Gandak Embankments Breach in Gopalganj, Saran
A Bihar flood alert has intensified after Gandak River embankments breached at two locations in Gopalganj and Saran on Wednesday. Heavy water discharge from barrages has increased pressure on flood-control structures across the region. Authorities have started emergency work at the affected sites as the flood threat remains high in parts of North Bihar.
Gandak embankment breaches in Gopalganj and Saran
In Gopalganj, a section of the Bandhauli-Sheetalpur-Faizullahpur Zamindari Bund breached near Sheetalpur village in Baikunthpur block. The damaged section is around six metres long. Officials said floodwater could reach low-lying areas in Parsauni, Sheetalpur and Pakhan villages. The breach could also affect local road connectivity.
Meanwhile, a section of the right embankment at Haijalpur village in Saran’s Maker block also subsided. The affected stretch is around eight metres long. A flood-control gate was damaged at the site. Officials said teams were working to strengthen the affected section and prevent further damage.
Heavy Gandak discharge raises flood risk
The latest breaches came after heavy rainfall in Nepal’s Gandak basin. The rainfall increased water flow into Bihar and put additional pressure on the river system. The Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage recorded a discharge of around 5.43 lakh cusecs on Tuesday morning.
As a result, several districts in North Bihar remain under close watch. These include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali. The Gandak has also reached very high levels near Bagaha, increasing concerns in low-lying areas.
Authorities step up flood-control measures
The Bihar Water Resources Department has deployed teams at vulnerable locations. Officials are repairing damaged sections and strengthening embankments. They are also monitoring river levels and other weak points along the flood-control network.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay alert and follow instructions from local authorities. Officials continue to monitor the situation as water levels change. Emergency teams remain ready to respond if the flood situation worsens.
