Surat Textile Market Fire: What Happened?
A massive fire at Shyam Sangini Textile Market in Saroli, Surat, which initially appeared to be an accident, is now being investigated as an alleged case of deliberate arson.
Police have arrested 33-year-old Vinod Pandit Sawale, a former accountant who had worked at a textile shop in the market. According to investigators, a dispute over around ₹10,000 in unpaid salary and alleged workplace harassment became a reason for the suspected arson.
The fire broke out around midnight on September 8–9, 2026, and destroyed textile goods worth approximately ₹24 crore, according to police estimates reported by multiple outlets.
Who Was Arrested?
Police arrested Vinod Pandit Sawale, 33, a native of Dhule, Maharashtra.
According to police, Sawale had joined the shop in April 2026 as an accountant and earned around ₹30,000 per month. He later left the job after a dispute with the shop owner.
Police say he claimed that around ₹10,000 of his salary was still due. He also allegedly told investigators that he felt he had been repeatedly questioned and harassed over his work.
How Did the Fire Allegedly Start?
According to the police investigation, Sawale allegedly purchased around ₹150 worth of petrol from a fuel station before the incident.
Investigators say he reached the market at night with his face covered and waited until the area became quiet.
CCTV footage allegedly showed a man entering the market carrying a bag and later setting fire to textile parcels kept outside the shop.
Police believe the fire was deliberately started at the former employer’s shop and then spread to nearby businesses.
How Did ₹10,000 Turn Into a ₹24 Crore Loss?
The alleged target was one shop, but the fire quickly spread because the market contained large quantities of textiles, packaging material and other highly flammable goods.
The flames spread to neighbouring shops, causing massive losses for traders who were reportedly not connected to the original salary dispute.
Times of India reported that shops numbered 601 to 617, belonging to four textile traders, were destroyed, while India Today and Aaj Tak reported 14 shops were gutted. The estimated value of the destroyed goods was around ₹24 crore.

- Abhishek Soni: around ₹2 crore

CCTV Helped Police Crack the Case
CCTV footage reportedly played a major role in the investigation.
According to India Today, the Crime Branch examined footage from more than 1,500 CCTV cameras under Surat Police’s Vishwas Project Phase 2.
Investigators reportedly tracked the suspect’s movements before and after the fire and eventually identified Sawale.
Where Did the Suspect Go After the Fire?
Police said that after learning that he had become a suspect, Sawale allegedly switched off his mobile phone and left Surat.
Investigators said he travelled to Khatu Shyam in Rajasthan, then to Ayodhya, and later to other locations in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
According to police, he returned to Surat about 12 days later, where the Crime Branch arrested him near the Dindoli area.
Was the Fire an Accident?
According to investigators, no.
The fire was initially treated as a possible accident, but police later said CCTV footage and other evidence indicated that it was deliberately started.
The case is now being investigated as alleged arson. The allegations against the arrested man remain subject to the legal process and have not been established by a court.
Market Fire Also Affected Other Traders
The alleged dispute was between a former employee and his employer, but the consequences spread far beyond them.
Other textile traders lost large amounts of stock in the fire. Reports also say authorities later shut the market complex over fire-safety violations, which disrupted business and prevented traders from accessing their shops.
