Russia Backs India’s Permanent UNSC Seat Bid, Lavrov Makes Big Statement at UN
Russia has backed India’s permanent UNSC seat bid at the United Nations, giving New Delhi fresh diplomatic support. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the statement during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Lavrov said Russia supports permanent seats for India and Brazil as part of wider reforms to the United Nations Security Council. He also called for stronger representation for Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Russia Supports India and Brazil for Permanent UNSC Seats
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Lavrov said Russia supports the candidatures of both India and Brazil for permanent seats.
Russia also opposed adding more Western countries as permanent members. Lavrov specifically mentioned Germany and Japan while outlining Moscow’s position on Security Council reform.
The latest statement comes as India continues its long-standing campaign for a permanent place on the Security Council. India has also worked with Brazil, Germany and Japan through the G4 group to push for UN reforms.
India Gets More Support for Permanent UNSC Seat
Russia is not the only country to support India’s demand. Portugal and Mauritius have also recently backed India’s candidature during the current UN General Assembly debate. Four Visegrád countries — Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic — also expressed support earlier this week.
The Security Council currently has 15 members. China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are its five permanent members. Each permanent member has veto power. The remaining 10 members are elected for two-year terms.

India’s permanent UNSC seat bid remains part of the wider debate over reforming the United Nations. Any change to the Council’s composition requires broad approval among UN member states, including the existing permanent members.
Russia’s latest statement adds to the growing international discussion around India’s role in a reformed Security Council. However, the final decision depends on the UN reform process and agreement among member states.
