Cyclone Arnab Latest Update: Deep Depression Nears Odisha-Andhra Coast
Cyclone Arnab is trending across India as a powerful weather system moves towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet classified it as a cyclone. The system is currently a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to cross the coast on Wednesday night.
Cyclone Arnab Landfall Update
The deep depression is moving west-northwestwards towards the coast. According to the IMD, it is expected to cross between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, during the night of September 23. The system was located around 60 km southeast of Kalingapatnam on Wednesday morning.
The weather system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Strong winds and rough sea conditions are also expected along the affected coastal areas. Wind speeds may reach 55–65 kmph, with gusts up to 75 kmph.
Odisha Schools Shut Amid Heavy Rain
Several districts in Odisha have announced school closures because of the weather threat. Schools and anganwadi centres in affected areas have been ordered to remain closed until September 24. Authorities have also placed several districts on high alert.
Southern Odisha is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. The IMD has also warned of extremely heavy rain in isolated areas. Officials are preparing for possible flooding, waterlogging and landslides.
Will It Become Cyclone Arnab?
The name Arnab has attracted attention because it is the next name on the North Indian Ocean cyclone list. The name was contributed by Bangladesh. However, the current system has not been officially named Cyclone Arnab.
The latest IMD forecast indicates that the system is likely to cross the coast as a deep depression rather than intensify into a cyclonic storm. Therefore, the immediate concern remains heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas along the Odisha-Andhra coast.
