India opened the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a commanding seven-wicket victory in New Delhi. The India vs Afghanistan 1st T20I was dominated by Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 82-run innings and Arshdeep Singh’s three-wicket haul as the hosts chased down 157 with 38 balls to spare.
Arshdeep leads India’s bowling attack
After opting to bowl, India made an immediate breakthrough when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck in the opening over. Afghanistan struggled during the powerplay before Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi launched a recovery.
Omarzai remained unbeaten on 64 off 44 balls, while Nabi contributed 33. Their crucial 83-run partnership gave Afghanistan a fighting total of 156.
Arshdeep was India’s most successful bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 3/19 from four overs. Bumrah, Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy also picked up wickets.
Abhishek Sharma destroys Afghanistan attack
India lost Sanju Samson early in the chase, but Abhishek quickly took control. The left-hander raced to his fifty in only 22 balls and eventually smashed 82 off 32 deliveries, putting India firmly on course for victory.
Ishan Kishan provided strong support with 42 as the pair made Afghanistan’s 157-run target look comfortable. Although Mohammad Nabi struck twice later, Afghanistan could not stop India from completing the chase.
The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second T20I will be played at the same venue in New Delhi on September 15.
