Mumbai Chembur Benzene Leak: 28-Tonne Tanker Triggers Emergency
BH24 Breaking News
A benzene leak from a tanker triggered an emergency response in Mumbai’s Chembur on Monday evening. The incident was reported around 8:12 pm near Mysore Colony on Mahul Road, close to the Monorail station. The tanker was carrying around 28 tonnes of benzene, according to officials. A 500-metre area around the site was cordoned off as a precaution. Traffic was also diverted from nearby roads while emergency teams worked to contain the leak. No injuries were reported.
Emergency Teams Launch Operation
Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel, police and other emergency teams reached the location soon after the leak was detected. Officials created a safety zone around the tanker because benzene is highly flammable and can pose a serious hazard. Traffic on Mysore Colony Road and Mahul Road was stopped during the operation. Operations at the nearby Mysore Colony Monorail station were also halted temporarily, according to officials.
The emergency teams then began transferring the benzene from the affected tanker into an empty tanker. The decanting operation was completed successfully. Both tankers were later shifted towards the BPCL refinery premises. Officials maintained security around the area while the operation was underway. The situation was brought under control without any reported casualties.
No Injuries Reported
Officials said the situation was under control after the chemical was safely transferred. The 500-metre safety cordon and traffic restrictions were part of the precautionary measures taken during the operation. Authorities are expected to examine the tanker and determine how the leak occurred.
The incident comes as another reminder of the risks involved in transporting hazardous chemicals through busy urban areas. However, the swift response by emergency teams helped prevent the leak from turning into a larger incident. No injuries or deaths have been reported so far.
