Indian Army pilots have pulled off a remarkable rescue mission at 18,600 feet in Ladakh. The pilots evacuated a casualty from a steep mountain slope near the Nun Kun massif in the Zanskar range. Strong winds, thin air and fading daylight made the operation extremely dangerous. Despite the difficult conditions, the rescue team completed the evacuation during the last available landing window of the day.
Indian Army Rescue at 18,600 Feet
The rescue became challenging as soon as the pilots reached the casualty’s location. The steep slope had no suitable space for a normal helicopter landing. Strong mountain winds added to the risk. The crew also had very little time because daylight was rapidly fading.
At 18,600 feet, thin air reduces engine performance and rotor lift. To make the helicopter lighter, the crew removed all non-essential equipment. They also carried limited fuel while keeping enough range to complete the evacuation safely.
One-Skid Landing Makes Rescue Possible
The most difficult part came when the helicopter reached the steep slope. With no conventional landing area available, the pilots carefully maintained a low hover. They then stabilised the helicopter with one skid touching the mountain slope.
The casualty was quickly secured and brought inside the helicopter. The pilots then lifted away from the slope and safely descended. The entire operation had to be completed before darkness made the mission even more dangerous.
