Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has supported a 25-year freeze on the current 543 Lok Sabha seats. He also wants Tamil Nadu’s existing 39 seats to remain unchanged.
The Congress Delimitation Stand comes amid a growing debate over the future distribution of Lok Sabha seats. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has also raised concerns over the issue.
Congress Delimitation Stand on Lok Sabha seats
Chidambaram wants the number of Lok Sabha seats to stay at 543 for another 25 years.
He also wants Tamil Nadu to keep its current 39 Lok Sabha seats.
According to Chidambaram, this position is in line with resolutions passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly and the Congress Working Committee.
Moreover, he welcomed the support for protecting Tamil Nadu’s representation.
Both the ruling TVK and opposition DMK have raised concerns over the delimitation process.
Why is Tamil Nadu concerned?
Delimitation could change the distribution of Lok Sabha seats among states.
Therefore, Tamil Nadu and some other southern states are closely watching the process.
Their main concern is population control.
Southern states have argued that they should not lose political representation because they successfully controlled population growth.
Vijay has also raised this issue.
Earlier, he urged the Centre to keep the Lok Sabha strength at 543. In addition, he called for the current distribution of seats among states to continue.
Vijay’s remarks trigger debate
However, Vijay’s remarks at the Southern Zonal Council later created political debate.
Questions were raised over whether his position on delimitation had changed.
His government later clarified its stand. It said Tamil Nadu remains committed to protecting its 39 Lok Sabha seats and its share in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Centre has said southern states will not face injustice.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also addressed these concerns. He has said the combined representation of southern states would increase rather than decrease under the proposed framework.
Why does delimitation matter?
Delimitation decides how parliamentary constituencies are distributed and redrawn.
Therefore, any future change could affect the political representation of different states.
For Tamil Nadu, the key issue is simple. The state does not want successful population control to reduce its political representation.
The Congress Delimitation Stand has now added more political weight to this debate.
As a result, the issue is likely to remain important as discussions over the future delimitation process continue.
