India began the India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test with a steady opening partnership before losing Yashasvi Jaiswal to a run-out on Day 1 in Galle. Captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bat first as India started a crucial two-match World Test Championship series.
Jaiswal falls after 47-run opening stand
KL Rahul and Jaiswal gave India a controlled start against Sri Lanka’s pace attack. The pair added 47 runs for the first wicket before a communication error ended the partnership.
Jaiswal was run out for 32, giving Sri Lanka their first breakthrough. Rahul remained at the crease and was joined by Devdutt Padikkal at No. 3.
The dismissal was particularly frustrating for India because both openers had looked comfortable during the opening phase. Jaiswal had attacked whenever Sri Lanka’s bowlers offered width, while Rahul played a more measured role.
India go spin-heavy in Galle
India selected a spin-heavy attack for conditions traditionally known to favour turn. Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar were all included in the XI, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna formed the pace combination.
Sri Lanka also handed a Test debut to spin-bowling all-rounder Keshara Nuwantha. Niroshan Dickwella returned to the Test side as wicketkeeper.
The match carries extra significance for India. It is the team’s 600th Test, marking another major milestone in its 94-year red-ball history. Galle is also hosting its 50th Test.
India entered the Sri Lanka series under pressure in the World Test Championship race. Gill had said before the match that his side needs several victories to remain in contention for the final.
The India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test is still in its opening session, so the score and match situation may change quickly. India will now look to rebuild after Jaiswal’s dismissal and turn the solid start into a competitive first-innings total.
